This year, Quilchena's division 16f has decided to do their author project on prolific author Jerry Spinelli. Students read at least one book as part of a book club, many students even read 2 or 3 of his books. Jerry Spinelli is an American author who wrote children, teen and early adult novels. He was born in Norristown, PA, USA, February 1, 1941. Spinelli currently lives in Phoenixville, PA. The book Babar the Elephant was Spinelli’s favorite book as a child. He graduated from Gettysburg College in 1963. Jerry Spinelli started writing at the age of sixteen. He is best known for the novels Maniac Magee and Wringer.
The first three novels he wrote were for adults, but the publishers refused to publish them. When Jerry Spinelli started his writing career, he preferred writing books for adults than kids. At the age of 41 Spinelli became an author. His first published book was Space Station Seventh Grade and his most recent books are Jake and Lily and Third Grade Angels. HManiac Magee became a movie in 2003. Spinelli has written 30 books.e won the Book for Young Adults medal. He also won the 1991 Newbery Medal for Maniac Magee and the 1998 Newbery Honor for Wringer.
Spinelli earned his MA (Master of Arts degree) in 1964. In 1977 Jerry Spinelli married Eileen Mesi, who is also an author. They have six children and sixteen grandchildren. Spinelli became an author after graduating from Gettysburg College.
